For the past 8 years, the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging from University of California, Los Angeles has been organizing and archiving international data received from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. The goal of the program is to gather as much data as possible about the disease in order to raise the effectiveness of prevention and treatment methods.

With a new promising effort, the data gathered is expected to reach more than 165 terabytes of genetic data. This is the equivalent of almost 165 thousand copies of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Researchers from more than 60 countries have partnered up in the quest of understanding the Alzheimer’s disease. Arthur Toga, the director of the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) says that “We collect vast amounts of imaging, cognitive and biosample data from hundreds of subjects with Alzheimer’s disease, those at risk, and controls. One of the more unique aspects of this study is that all data are shared with any scientist, without embargo. We have already engaged many scientists around the world with this open access…

For example, in 2004, UCLA’s Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) began compiling all the data regarding the biology of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease that was generated by the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). ADNI is an ambitious, worldwide effort by scientists to define the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. On July 2, UCLA Health System announced that the effort has been expanded to include the genome sequencing of the more than 800 individuals enrolled in ADNI. This information, which encompasses 165 terabytes (a trillion bytes) of new genetic data, will be absorbed, organized, and disseminated by LONI…

It’s all part of the most extensive study ever conducted on Alzheimer’s.

Now researchers are about to take an even closer look at Bunnell, a retired engineer from Madison, Connecticut.

Working with $2 million in new grants to be announced this week, the researchers for the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative will, for the first time, start mapping the DNA of 800 participants in a study attempting to find the root causes of memory loss. The goal is to see if physical changes from Alzheimer’s can be matched to genetic disparities, which can then be compared with findings from healthy people like Bunnell…

“More and more retired people are heading back to the nearest classroom — as students and, in some cases, teachers — and they are finding out that school can be lovelier the second time around. Some may be thinking of second careers, but most just want to keep their minds stimulated, learn something new or catch up with a subject they were always curious about but never had time for.

“For many, at least part of the motivation is based on widespread reports that exercising the brain may preserve it, forestalling mental decline and maybe even Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

“Is there any truth to it? And if there is, what type of learning is best suited to the older brain?”

With funding from the Brin Wojcicki Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association, scientists will sequence and study the entire genomes of more than 800 older adults currently participating in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. The project will provide a listing of all 3 billion segments, called base pairs, of genetic code in each participant’s DNA…
